OCTOBER 2005 REPORTBOWRING TOP MAN
HARLOW OPEN RESULT Over 200 people packed into the main hall at Great Parndon Community Centre, Harlow to witness a days enthralling darts at the Harlow Owls Open Darts Knockout. Entrants came from far and wide with a strong local contingent. 2003 World Champion Australian Tony David revisiting the event he first won in 2001. Tony lost out to Stuart Dutton on his board final. Sawbridgeworth Brewery sponsored the event for the third successive year. The £250 winners prize went to Andy Callaby (Wisbech) last year’s runner-up. Daniel Sare (Loughton) took the runners up prize of £100.00. Andy finally triumphed winning the best of 9 legs final 5-4. Daniel won 1st leg in 17 darts; Andy the 2nd leg in 16 darts; Daniel won the 3rd leg in 22 darts, with Andy missing out on two shots at a double; 4th leg went to Andy in 16; the 5th leg to Daniel in 13; the 6th to Andy in 13; the 7th to Daniel in 13; and the 8th to Andy in 14 to level. Andy won the toss for first throw in the final leg, which went with the darts and winning the match in 16 darts. The semi-finalists, Alex Hogg (London) & Steve Smith (Essex), picked up £50; with quarter-finalist taking £25 each, and were Adrian Genery (Colchester), Bill Woods (Harlow), Stuart Dutton (Watford) and Andy Derrick (Tonbridge). Best Lady Natalie Carter (Australia), Tony David’s partner, took £25 after a play off against Carla Leftwich (Harlow). Daniel Sare (Loughton) took £25 prize for the highest shot out of 152.
SUPERLEAGUE NEWS There were some big results in the opening fixtures of the men’s Superleague. Harwich beat new boys Thurrock 12-0; champions Thameside beat Chelmsford 11-1; Cressing won 10-2 against another of the new teams, Great Dunmow; Newly formed Shotgate beat highly fancied Hatfield Peverel 10-2; Basildon won at Ingatestone 8-4 and Colchester beat Wickford 7-5. The best game’s of the week came from Alan Collins (Thameside), who beat Dave Bocking (Chelmsford) 3-0 with winning legs of 18, 16 & 17 for an average of 29.47; Simon Cook (Harwich), who beat Michael McCombe (Thurrock) 3-2 with winning legs of 19, 17 & 14 for an average of 28.70; Barry Adlam (Thameside), who beat Andrew Kateley (Chelmsford) 3-1 with winning legs of 17, 18 & 17 for an average of 29.47. In the ladies section, Clacton, Wickford and Braintree all recorded 6-3 wins against Colchester, Witham and Chelmsford respectively. The best game of the week was Lynn Kelly (Braintree), who beat Sheila Allen (Chelmsford) 3-0 with a 19.27 average. TOURNAMENT NEWS IN THE COUNTY Southend Open: on Sunday 16th October, at the American Pool Shack. This competition is limited to 128 players and registration closes on 12th September. Doors open 10:00 am toe the oche at 11:15 am, entry £5. A prize fund of £1,000 available, a guaranteed £500 to the winner. Poppy Appeal: on Friday 11th November, at the Royal British Legion, New London Road, Chelmsford. This competition is for teams of 3 or 4 players with an entry fee of £5. Doors open 7:00 pm toe the oche at 8:30 pm., Please note no prize money, trophies only. Little N Large Monthly Result (Wickford): Paul Doherty won the August competition beating Dave Solly 4-3 in the final. Dave Orton and Richie Edhouse were the losing semi-finalists. Dave Solly took the prize for the highest finish of 161 and the most 180’s with eight. AROUND THE LEAGUE’S: Brentwood Borough & District: Cherry Tree ‘A’ swept the board in division one, winning the league, team pairs and Horsnell Shield; the White Hart finished runners-up. Relegated next summer are the Bentley ‘A’ and Brave Nelson. In division two, the Rising Sun dominated affairs winning the league and team pairs; the Harold Wood NC ‘A’ finishing second. Relegated are both Railway ‘B’ and Henderson ‘B’. Cherry Tree ‘B’, who also took the team pairs, won division three. Phil Daldry (Cherry Tree A) is awarded the player of the year winning all 14-games, ten of which were 2-0, Andrew Westcott (Bentley A) finished runner-up. The division two player of the year was John Wastenage (Prince of Wales) winning all 12-games, eleven of which were 2-0, Glyn Lovell (Rising Sun) was runner-up. The third division’s best player was Trevor Brogan (Cherry Tree B) winning 11 with a single loss. The top finish was 160 by D Smilley (White Horse B) and Lee Musto (Cherry Tree A) scored the most 180’s with six. Clacton Mid Week: The annual Peter Thorne Charity Cup for scratch doubles was played on 11 August at Wick Lodge. Jenny Brennan and Nigel Ball took the first semi-final against Peter Grubb and Gaby Mason while Colin Fordham and Lee Ballard entered the final by winning against Karen Bailey paired with Les Bland. The first of the 3-leg final saw Colin hit three tons against Nigel’s two with Lee hitting the winning double. In the second leg Colin hit a 125 and Lee again hit the double to end the match. In earlier rounds, Colin Fordham recorded the only 180 of the competition. Due to a relatively early finish, 38 players entered into an Open Singles competition. Matt Pickard beat Del Ward-Wilkinson in the first semi and Nigel Ball overcame Adrian Genery. The best of three final saw Nigel take the first leg, Matt level it and Nigel take the final leg to win. In the final, Matt hit scores of 100, 123 and 140 with Nigel hitting two straight tons. Paul Bailey hit a 180 in an earlier round. The proceeds of the night including player entry, pub cards sold and donations a-plenty raised £265. As winners of the Peter Thorne Cup, Colin and Lee elected The Meningitis Trust to benefit. Ingatestone & District: The annual Charity Fours raised £128; the Beach Hut Fund will receive 50% and the Heart of Darts 50%. Only 15-teams ventured out to partake and there were some early exit’s for favoured teams, with the Chelmer Inn and Rising Sun Dragons departing before the semis. The Black Bull (Martin Compton, Barry Devenish, Adam Friend and Alan Church) won through to the final with wins over the Fox & Hounds ‘B’, New Barn and Royal Oak ‘B1’. The Railway ‘A’ (Paul Sedge, Peter Tompkins, Roy Crabb and Simon Pratt) beat Charlie’s Mob, Royal Oak ‘B2’ and Eagle & Child on route to the final. The Black Bull won the final 2-1 in a close fought contest. The division one champions are the Black Bull with the Chelmer Inn runners-up. The Eagle Child is promoted from the second division as champions along with the Crown. In division 3, the Horse & Groom after two successive relegations, bounce back to second with the Rose & Crown as runners-up. The Chelmsford Royal British Legion, the Prince of Wales finishing runners-up, won division four. The player of the seasons in each division were Andrew Kateley (Chelmer Inn), Kevan Crowe (Eagle & Child), Scott Bennett (C.S.C.) and Eddie Smith (Crown B); the Individual League Singles champions in each division are Andrew Kateley, John Wastenage (Crown) Scott Bennett and Karl Holland (C.R.B.L.). |
